Emerging Leaders

Program Overview – The Emerging Leader program at Oglethorpe University was created to promote leadership development, mentoring, and opportunities to engage students in their community. The program is intended to be a fun, upbeat environment where students are coached and mentored in order to help them realize their own leadership potential while encouraging them to step out and get involved in order to impact the OU community. Emerging Leader program participants will be selected based off recommendations provided by faculty, staff, and student leaders. Students that receive a recommendation will be asked to complete an application that will solidify their interest in the program and commitment to the four week series as well as help the Student Engagement & Leadership Office and Emerging Leaders Mentors gauge the leadership experience and interest of the participants. The program will consist of fourĀ  meetings where students will get to know each other and their mentor, learn about leadership skills (based on the books The Student Leadership Challenge and Habitudes), and use group discussion and activities to develop practical applications for what they have learned.

Program Goals

  • Provide leadership development skills and content to 25-30 underclassmen
  • Utilize six Emerging Leaders alumni as mentors
  • Expose underclassmen to leadership opportunities at Oglethorpe University
  • Equip students with leadership skills that can be used here at Oglethorpe and beyond their college experience.

University faculty and staff are notified of their role to nominate potential Emerging Leaders early in the Spring semester. Students are then offered an application by email no later than the last week of February. After all applications are reviewed, students chosen for the program are usually notified by Spring Break.
